Historically, despite Lagos’ prominence, educational access for its indigenous population faced challenges. The creation of LASU in 1983 was a strategic initiative to counter these low school attendance rates and bolster educational standards across the state.

The journey began in April 1981 when Dr. Femi Agbalajobi led a committee exploring the possibility of transforming LASCOTECH into a university. Although this idea was initially shelved, a new vision emerged. In 1982, a technical committee proposed establishing a multi-campus university named Lagos State University (LASU), designed to cater to various educational needs across different locations.

By 1983, under Governor Alhaji Lateef Jakande’s leadership, LASU was officially founded, with its main campus in Ojo. Despite a challenging start with limited staff and resources, teaching and research activities began in October 1984. The university’s administrative framework was soon established, including key units like the Registry, Academic Planning Unit, and Health Centre.

Today, LASU operates across three main campuses: Ojo (the main campus), Ikeja (housing the University College of Medicine), and Epe (home to the Faculty of Engineering and the School of Agriculture). With over 43,000 students enrolled, LASU continues to grow under the dynamic leadership of Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, reflecting its ongoing commitment to educational excellence and innovation.
