- Under Chief Sam Mbakwe’s leadership, the university was established after Federal Government approval.
- IMSU initially operated as a liberal studies tertiary institution with a multi-campus structure across senatorial zones.
- It transitioned to a consolidated campus in Uturu in 1986 due to space constraints.
- After Abia State’s creation, IMSU’s facilities were ceded to Abia State, leading to its re-establishment in Owerri by Chief Evans Enwerem in 1992.
- Professor T.O.C. Ndubuizu was appointed Vice-Chancellor to oversee the relocation to Owerri.
- Academic programs were initially organized in colleges and schools, later transitioning to faculties in 2001/2002.

Candidates Eligible to Buy IMSU Supplementary Post UTME Screening Form
- UTME Candidates:
- Must have chosen Imo State University, Owerri, as their first choice and scored a minimum of 170 in the UTME.
- Candidates who did not initially choose IMSU but scored the required cut-off mark can also apply. However, they must change their first choice institution to IMSU via the JAMB website.
- Direct Entry Candidates:
- Must be holders of OND/HND/First Degree, ‘A’ Level, or their equivalents in relevant disciplines and subjects.
- General Requirements:
- Candidates must ensure that their qualifying results are uploaded to JAMB.
- Candidates awaiting ‘O’ Level results must upload them to JAMB as soon as they are released.
- Candidates failing to upload their results to JAMB will not be considered for admission.
