About Federal Polytechnic Idah (IDAH POLY)
The Federal Polytechnic Idah, originally known as Idah College of Technology, has a fascinating history that dates back to its establishment on November 28th, 1977. This institution was born out of a national effort by the Federal Military Government to tackle the practical challenges facing Nigeria’s economy. It was one of seven polytechnics established under Decree No. 33 in July 1979, with a clear mission to offer full-time courses in technology, applied science, commerce, and management.
Nestled in the historic town of Idah, Kogi State, the Polytechnic sprawls across an impressive 1,238.5 hectares of land. When it first opened its doors, the Polytechnic had a modest beginning with just 11 academic staff, 19 senior administrative staff, and 86 supporting staff, catering to 220 pioneering students spread across five departments. The institution initially operated out of a temporary office in a rented building within Idah town.
Through negotiations with the Benue State Government, the Polytechnic acquired the temporary site of the Government Teachers College in Alloma, which became its first campus. The growth of the institution was carefully planned, with a master plan developed by the Federal Ministry of Education in 1977. Construction for the main buildings and facilities began in 1981, paving the way for the Polytechnic’s future.
A significant milestone was achieved in September 1986 when the School of Engineering transitioned from the temporary site to the permanent campus. Today, the Federal Polytechnic Idah operates entirely from this permanent site, with all academic departments and administrative offices fully established.
Over the years, the Polytechnic has flourished, now offering a wide array of 50 academic programs across five distinct schools: Business Studies, Engineering, Environmental Studies, Technology, and General & Administrative Studies. This expansion reflects the institution’s ongoing commitment to providing quality education and addressing the evolving needs of the nation.
