How Post UTME Results are Calculated: a Breakdown of Three (3) Universities.
When it comes to the calculation of Post UTME Results, the approach varies from schools. Unlike the JAMB UTME which is fixed and has a universal method or way of calculating students’ scores and their result, Post UTME results calculation depends on the systems or directives of the school.
The Implication of this is that, there is no one sure way of calculating post UTME results, various schools adopt different approaches depending on the one that suits them.
In this article as you read on, you will discover how various schools calculate their own Post UTME scores to arrive at the mark which is then used to admit students into the various fields of study.

Remember that for schools that offer admission based on post UTME, your score, whether high or low, is a great determinant of whether you will be admitted or not.
Federal University of Technology, Minna (FUTMINNA).
The Federal University of Technology, Minna administers post UTME for prospective students to determine their suitability for the course they apply. In doing this the school combines the aggregate of students’ UTME results with the post UTME which is usually the 4 subjects a candidate sat for during JAMB.
In other words, the school gives students examinations based on the 4 subjects they registered for during JAMB UTME. The result is then combined with their total score of the post UTME and then divided by 2.
The final result is then used to determine the qualification of the student, whether he or she will be admitted.
Getting a high score in the JAMB UTME is very important as it gives one an edge over others when the post UTME is administered. For instance if a student gets 270 points over 400 in his JAMB UTME, he would still have a high score even if he gets only 180 in the post UTME.
For Mathematics illustration:
A got 270 in UTME and 180 in the post UTME. His aggregate and final score will be calculated thus; 270 + 180 = 450 ÷ by 2
The final score will then be 225.
University of Abuja.
The calculation of Post UTME results in the University of Abuja is a bit dicey and would need one to read carefully with rapt attention to be able to comprehend properly.
The University of Abuja does not administer any other examination for the purpose of admission other than the JAMB UTME. What it does however for its Post UTME process is to combine the JAMB score, O’level results and the number of times the O’level results to be used was written by a candidate.
(O’level result + number of sitting + JAMB Score)
For scoring the O’level results, the grades a person gets are very important because the better the grades, the higher the points. See below
A= 6 points
B= 4 points and
C= 3 marks
For the number of sitting, a candidate who sat and passed once has 10 points to his advantage and for the JAMB result, it is divided by 8 so a candidate who scored 260 in his UTME we have 33 points (260÷8)
For proper understanding, let’s calculate the score of a candidate.
Sittings for exams:
Assuming he sat only once he would have 10 points
JAMB result
Assuming he scored 260, he would have 33 points (260÷8)
O’level results:
Assuming he has 5Cs, 2Bs and 2As, it will be (5×3) + (2×4) + (2×6) this will be 15+8+12 = 35.
The final aggregate will then be 35 + 10 + 33 which will equal =78/100points
University of Por Harcourt (Uniport)
The University of Port Harcourt subjects it prospective students to an aptitude test which is registered and written online.
The result of the test is then added to the UTME results of such candidate.
The aggregate is gotten by the addition of the JAMB score and the score from the aptitude test, then divided by 2 i.e JAMB score 230, aptitude test score 210, aggregate will be 230+210 ÷ 2 = 220.
In conclusion, most institutions that conduct post UTME follow one of the methods explained above. However they are liberty to make changes they deem necessary. Understand the kind of post UTME your desired institution make use of and work towards it.
