About FUNAAB

The Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), located in Ogun State, Nigeria, has a rich history that began on January 1, 1988.

This date marks the re-establishment of the university from the Federal University of Technology, Abeokuta (FUTAB), which had been merged into the College of Science and Technology, Abeokuta (COSTAB) in 1984.

The demerger of 1988 resulted in the creation of two pioneering Universities of Agriculture, one in Abeokuta and the other in Makurdi.

Professor Nurudeen Olorun-Nimbe Adedipe was appointed the inaugural Vice-Chancellor and officially took office on January 28, 1988.

However, for years, this date was mistakenly celebrated as the university’s founding day until a review in 2010 correctly recognized January 1, 1988, as the true foundation date.

The university’s early years saw leadership under His Royal Highness Alhaji Kabir Umar, the Emir of Katagum, who served as the first Chancellor.

Today, the role is held by His Royal Eminence, Edidem Ekpo Okon, the Obong of Calabar. The current Vice-Chancellor, Professor Olusola Babatunde Kehinde, along with Deputy Vice-Chancellors Professor O. D. Akinyemi (Academics) and Professor K. Adebayo (Development), continues to drive the university forward.

FUNAAB operates under the motto “Knowledge for Development,” reflecting its commitment to using education as a tool for societal advancement and innovation.
