- In 1978, Archbishop Benson Andrew Idahosa received a divine directive from God to establish a university for His glory, understanding the significance of such an undertaking in Nigeria.
- Initially, private individuals were not permitted to establish and manage tertiary institutions according to Decree No. 33, but Archbishop Idahosa pursued this vision despite challenges.
- He formed a committee, including prominent individuals, to execute the establishment of the university.
- Despite legal barriers, an application was submitted to the National Universities Commission in 1992.
- In 1997, the institution was affiliated with Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, for degree awards.
- With the amendment of Decree No. 33, the University applied for approval to the Special Committee on Private Universities (SCOPU).
- After Archbishop Idahosa’s passing in 1998, his wife, Rev. Margaret Benson-Idahosa, continued the pursuit of the university’s establishment.
- In February 2002, Benson Idahosa University received a license from the Federal Government through the National Universities Commission to operate as a university.
- Prof. Eghosa Osagie became the first Vice-Chancellor, and Mr. E. M. Obadan served as the first Registrar, with Bishop FEB Idahosa as the President and Archbishop Margaret E. Benson-Idahosa as Chancellor.

- The undergraduate admissions process is ongoing at Benson Idahosa University.
- Prospective students can initiate the process by completing the admissions form online or obtaining it from designated contact points in Port-Harcourt, Abuja, Lagos, Warri, or the Admissions Office at the University campus in Benin City.
- General admission requirements for undergraduate programs include a minimum of five O’level credit passes, including Mathematics and English, obtained in relevant subjects at not more than two sittings in examinations such as WASSCE, NECO, or their equivalents.
